How to Choose A Candidate That's Right for You

People often ask me, “how should I evaluate Hideout’s candidates?” With several names on the ballot for the open mayoral seat and two town councilor seats, it can be a lot of information to wade through. So, I reviewed some excellent guides from the League of Women Voters, a non-partisan voter education group that ran our Hideout candidate forum at the Kamas Library on 9/30.

The League suggests that your decision basically comes down to two things: issues (what you care about) and leadership (who you believe can deliver).  Based on their local voter guides from across the country, I’ve distilled a few questions you can ask yourself as you explore candidate websites, election materials, and conversations with friends/neighbors (who may have candidate insights that aren’t in print). Hope you find these helpful. Thanks for being such an engaged voter!

How does the candidate campaign?

  • Are they consistently professional, well-organized, and ethical, avoiding what the League refers to as distortions or mischaracterizations?

  • Do they take accountability for what they say and believe?

  • Do they accept invitations to debates, and engage with groups that may disagree with their views?

Campaigns are an excellent gauge of how a candidate will serve when in office.

Are they clear, consistent and realistic on the issues?

  • Look at early communications and campaign literature. Is the candidate sticking to their focus?

  • Do they have achievable goals that can be accomplished within their term?

  • Or are they making a laundry list of big promises just to win voters?

Leaders with defined priorities and realistic plans are more likely to get things done.

What have they achieved for the town?

  • How have they participated in  volunteering, advocacy, or government service?

  • Beyond the activity of what they’re “working on”,  what have they actually completed for the town?

  • Have they proven their ability to navigate local resources and succeed within the constraints of government?

Private sector skills are valuable, but don’t always translate directly to the municipal arena.
